Process: Unstitched

Georges on Collins and No Vacancy Gallery presents Process: Unstitched.

An exhibition of fashion, photography, illustration and collaboration of works created during the Process: Unstitched open studio residency in Georges on Collins.

For nearly two months Process: Unstitched has been showcasing the talents of six young creatives working in the fashion industry in an open-studio environment. The participants came together to work in a communal environment putting their techniques, talents and output into the public eye.

A developing display of their visual and textile output will culminate in an exhibition of works created by the designers as well as various collaborations across different disciplines.

The stunning results of the residency will be exhibited on and around the working spaces of the designers providing a rare glimpse of the processes and produce of Melbourne's young fashion creatives.

Including works by She is Frank (fashion photography), Sarah Hankinson (fashion illustration), Park and Best, Violet & I and MADE BY WARREN (fashion designers).

Process: Unstitched

Sarah Hankinson

Melbourne Illustrator Sarah Hankinson creates feminine yet striking works which play off broken lines and occasional splashes of colour. After graduating from a diploma of Illustration in 2004 commissions have come from magazines, fashion labels and publishers.

Sarah's illustration style is elegant, youthful, and strongly fashion orientated, many of her pieces focusing on the female form and made up from a variety of mediums including inks, charcoal, pencils, cut paper and fabrics. Sarah has exhibited at 'Chapel off Chapel' and 'Design A Space' galleries in Prahran, Melbourne.

Violet & I

Melbourne based fashion designer Anna Linklater launched her label Violet & I in February this year. Violet & I is a jumble of vintage charm, fresh vibrant colours and bohemian grace.

Beginning with a visual arts course after high school, Anna dabbled in 2 years of interior design before finding her true love in fashion design at RMIT. After graduating from a Diploma of Fashion Design at the end of 2008, a frenzy of fabrics, tears, laughter and sheer determination saw Violet & I make its debut for Spring Summer 09/10.

Currently stocked in 12 stores Australia wide, Violet & I is an eclectic mix of wearable pieces, always feminine, drawn from stories of days gone by and journeys to be had.

Park and Best Designs

Park and Best Designs is collaboration between Kiri Gorter and Michelle Gordon. The label is driven by a love of classic silhouettes with distinctive detailing and incorporates elements of evening and street wear. The designs are custom made with each garment reflecting the Park and Best aesthetic as well as the personality of the individual who wears them.

Michelle Gordon was trained in theatre design at The Victorian College of the Arts. She has designed costumes and sets for such companies as A Bit of Argy Bargy (Melbourne Fringe), VCA Drama and worked alongside Anna Tregloan for The Malthouse Theatre. She is now looking to expand her repertoire into the fashion industry through Park and Best.

After completing her Diploma in Clothing Production (CIT), Kiri Gorter pursued studies in Product Development and Merchandising as well as a degree in Merchandising for Fashion and Textiles (RMIT). A lifelong love of sewing and textiles and an interest in clothing, rather than fashion, has led her to explore design with a view to create pieces that are intriguing as well as functional. By drawing on each other's skills and background, the pair is able to learn from one another while creating a distinctive style that could only be Park and Best.

MADE BY WARREN

'MADE BY WARREN' is the off-set title of young Melbourne based designer/maker Warren Harrison. Inspired by collaborations with visual artists, Harrison plays with the functionality of clothing. The formal constraints of shirt-making and Garment construction are cast aside as he explores the notions of prêt-a-porter verses the unwearable. Twisting traditional techniques Harrison concentrates on form in the absence of function sculpting pieces that capture clothing in the purgatory that exists between the 'designed' and the 'worn' garment.

Having only ever released a small range of hand crafted one-off's, there is much more to come from this promising young designer/maker.
