Spirit of the Black Dress 2010

As a part of Georges commitment to emerging designers, we welcome back The Spirit of the Black Dress for the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival in 2010.

The aim of The Spirit of the Black Dress is to promote emerging designers and bring attention to the exceptional talent born of the Australian consciousness. The Spirit of the Black Dress brings together different factions of the fashion and textiles industry, building a stronger community in order to increase the international appreciation for Australian design.

In 2009 ten emerging designers were chosen by a panel of industry experts from entries received from across Australia. The designers chosen to represent the Spirit of the Black Dress 2009 were: Airdrie Makim & Claire Djuve, Alyana Eau, Andy Tsang, Kristy Barber, Leigh Buchannon, Michelle Czech, Nikolina Kucan, Noelle Kan, Rachael Cassar and Sonya Kraan. The dresses were photographed by Christian Blanchard and displayed next to the photos in a gallery setting as part of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week.

The L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival have picked up the Spirit of the Black Dress for their 2010 program, so the innovative exhibition will once again return to Georges on Collins. Keep an eye on our facebook page for regular updates.

Call for submissions

The Spirit of the Black Dress Exhibition 2010 is calling for submissions. Up to ten emerging Fashion and Textile designers will be showcased, delivering the Spirit of the Black Dress to the wider creative community. Applicants will be assessed on originality, silhouette and texture, and must use sustainable production and materials.

Successful applicant will:

• Have their garments professionally photographed and exhibited as part of L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival
• Gain media exposure and promotion in the wider artistic and sustainability society
• Meet contemporary emerging fashion and textiles designers, and explore common issues
• Attend an Opening Gala at Georges on Collins
